Tbilisi's position at the crossroads of the Caucasus makes it one of Europe's best day-trip capitals. The most popular single-day excursion in Georgia is the 150-km round trip to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): the Georgian Military Highway follows the Aragvi River through Ananuri Castle (a beautifully preserved 17th-century fortress on a reservoir) and the Zhinvali reservoir before climbing through the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m to the village of Kazbegi, where 5,047-m Mount Kazbek dominates the skyline. Closer to Tbilisi, Mtskheta — the former capital — sits 20 km north and holds two UNESCO-listed monuments: Jvari Monastery (586 AD) on a cliff above the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (1010–1029), built over the spot where Christ's robe is said to be buried. East of Tbilisi, the Kakheti day loop takes in Alaverdi Cathedral (11th century, 55 m tall), Sighnaghi's hilltop walls, and a winery lunch in Telavi — roughly 200 km round-trip. South of the capital, David Gareja cave monastery complex sits on the Azerbaijan border, 60 km of dirt road from Tbilisi, with 6th-century frescoes in the Udabno caves and a desert landscape that feels unlike anywhere else in Georgia. The spa town of Borjomi — famous across the former Soviet Union for its naturally carbonated mineral water — lies 155 km southwest, with the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park trailhead accessible on foot from the spa park. All these destinations are reachable by organised day tour from Tbilisi for €20–45 per person in shared vehicles.
