Day trips from Batumi: Adjara mountains, fortresses, and waterfalls
Last reviewed: 2026-04-17Beyond the Batumi boardwalk
Batumi — Georgia’s Black Sea resort city — is usually experienced as a seaside destination: the boardwalk, the botanical gardens, the casinos, the seafood restaurants. But beyond the city, the Adjara region rises sharply into subtropical mountains that are among the wettest and greenest in Georgia, with stone arch bridges, waterfalls, working mosque-villages, a UNESCO-listed rainforest, and a 2,000-year-old Roman fortress on the Turkish border. All within 90 minutes of the boardwalk.
This guide covers the six best day trips from Batumi — the proper counterweight to a week of swimming and casinos.
At a glance
- Base: Batumi (population 170,000, extensive hotel and dining choice)
- Best season: April–October for the mountains; year-round for the coast. Winter skiing at Goderdzi.
- Climate: Subtropical, very wet — Batumi gets more than 2,500 mm of rain annually
- Transport: Rental car, taxi, minibus tours, and organised tours all work; marshrutkas for some destinations
- Border awareness: Sarpi is a functioning Turkey border crossing; bring a passport if near
Transport from Batumi
Organised tours
Batumi has a solid tour ecosystem focused on half-day mountain trips. Prices 40–90 GEL per person for group minibus tours.
Book a Makhuntseti waterfall and bridge day tour from BatumiRental car
Good roads between Batumi and most destinations. Mountain roads toward Khulo and Goderdzi become rough at higher elevations and require caution in wet or snowy conditions.
Marshrutka
Regular services from Batumi’s central bus station to all villages. Fares 2–8 GEL. Slow but authentic.
Taxi
Bolt and local taxis are cheap. A half-day to Makhuntseti costs 60–100 GEL for the vehicle.
Day trip 1: Gonio Fortress and the Sarpi border
Overview
Gonio — 15 km south of Batumi — is the most significant Roman site in the Caucasus. Founded in the 1st century CE as the fortress of Apsaros, it controlled the Roman frontier against the Colchians and later the Byzantine eastern border. The walls stand 5 metres high and enclose a rectangle of approximately 4.75 hectares; the interior is under ongoing archaeological excavation. Legends claim the apostle Matthias is buried within the walls.
What to see
- The curtain walls and 22 towers: Largely preserved, walkable from inside
- The archaeological museum: Small but informative; Roman coins, amphorae, grave goods
- The excavation areas: Visible Roman baths, street grids, and the forum
Allow 1.5 hours.
Sarpi border beach
Five kilometres further south, the Sarpi border between Georgia and Turkey sits at a small beach village. Interesting briefly for the border-checkpoint architecture (a distinctive modern Georgian design by Jürgen Mayer) and, technically, for walking across into Turkey if you have the energy and a second passport stamp in mind. The beach itself is pleasant — cleaner than the central Batumi one.
Itinerary
Morning: Gonio fortress (1.5 hours). Afternoon: Sarpi beach and border viewing (1.5 hours). Lunch at a Gonio seafood restaurant.
Day trip 2: Makhuntseti waterfall and Queen Tamar’s Bridge
Overview
Thirty kilometres east of Batumi on the road to Khulo, two classic Adjaran sights stand within 100 metres of each other: the 20-metre Makhuntseti waterfall (cascading over a rock face into a clear pool), and Queen Tamar’s Bridge — a graceful 12th-century stone arch spanning the Acharistskali river, preserved and still fully usable.
What to see
- The waterfall: Walk from the roadside parking to the base pool (200m), or climb to the upper viewpoint (steep, 15 minutes)
- Queen Tamar’s Bridge: Walk across for the photograph
- Nearby wine tasting: Adjara has a small wine tradition centred on the Chkhaveri grape; several roadside tastings in this corridor
Itinerary
A half-day trip combining both sites plus lunch at a traditional Adjaran restaurant.
Day trip 3: Mtirala National Park
Overview
Mtirala (“the Weeper”) National Park, 25 km east of Batumi, is one of the wettest places in Georgia — rainfall exceeds 4,000 mm annually — and a preserved fragment of the original Colchis subtropical rainforest. The park contains ancient laurel, rhododendron, and chestnut; waterfalls; and guesthouses offering traditional mountain food.
What to see
- The 6-km visitor-centre-to-waterfall trail: A gentle forest walk with a waterfall destination
- The longer ridge trails: 4–8 hour hiking loops for serious walkers
- Traditional guesthouse lunches: Local cheese, corn bread (mchadi), and wild-berry wine
Itinerary
Depart Batumi 09:30, walk the main trail (2 hours), lunch at a guesthouse, return by 16:00.
Day trip 4: Khulo and Goderdzi Pass (full day)
Overview
The long Adjaran day trip east — 90 km into the mountains to Khulo (the main mountain town of Adjara) and onward to the Goderdzi Pass at 2,025 metres. The landscape becomes alpine; the villages become Muslim-majority (a legacy of Ottoman rule); the cable car at Khulo is a scenic highlight; and in winter, Goderdzi is an emerging ski resort.
What to see
- The Khulo cable car: A Soviet-era aerial tram crossing a valley between two mountain villages
- Khulo market and mosque: A cultural experience of highland Adjaran life
- Goderdzi Pass: Alpine meadows in summer, ski lifts in winter
- The Chirukhi ridge: Spectacular mountain views eastwards
Itinerary
Depart 08:30, Makhuntseti stop, Khulo lunch, cable car and village walk, Goderdzi Pass, return by 19:00. A long day but memorable.
Winter variant
Goderdzi’s small ski resort (2019+) offers alpine skiing at a fraction of the cost of European resorts. A full day there from Batumi is a viable ski day in January–March.
Day trip 5: Machakhela National Park
Overview
Machakhela is a narrow river valley southeast of Batumi, running from the Black Sea coast inland into wooded highlands to the Turkish border. The valley is famous for its traditional stone-arch bridges (over 15 still in use, most built 16th–18th century), tobacco growing, and the mountain village of Adjaris-Tskali.
What to see
- The old bridges: At least 6 medieval arch bridges visible on a 10-km drive
- Machakhela village traditions: Tobacco fields, water mills, traditional Adjaran houses
- Hiking in the upper valley: Forest trails, small waterfalls
- The Machakhela gun museum: Small but locally significant — Machakhela was historically famous for rifle-making
Itinerary
Half-day morning or afternoon trip; combines well with Gonio for a full day.
Day trip 6: Kobuleti and the northern Adjaran coast
Overview
Thirty kilometres north of Batumi, Kobuleti is the quieter, longer coastal resort — a stretch of pebble beach and low-rise hotels catering to Georgian families rather than casino tourists. The Kolkheti National Park preserves the last significant wetlands of the Colchis lowland, including the Paliastomi Lake with its biodiversity and endemic species.
What to see
- Kobuleti beach walk: 10 km of uninterrupted Black Sea strand
- Kolkheti wetlands bird-watching: Exceptional migration stopover
- Ureki iron-sand beach (just further north): The famous magnetic sands reputed to have therapeutic properties
Itinerary
A relaxed day: drive up mid-morning, coastal lunch in Kobuleti, walk, bird-watching excursion if interested, return by late afternoon.
Suggested 3-day schedule from Batumi
- Day 1: Gonio + Sarpi + Machakhela (full day, southern coast and valley)
- Day 2: Makhuntseti + Mtirala (full day mountain/forest)
- Day 3: Khulo + Goderdzi (long day into the high mountains)
Add a rest day on the Batumi beach or boardwalk between days 2 and 3.
Where to eat
Ukrainian Restaurant Mama Manana (Gonio): The reliable Gonio seafood choice.
Adjara House (near Makhuntseti): Traditional Adjaran food in a mountain setting. Try Adjaruli khachapuri (the boat-shaped one, originally from here) in its homeland.
Mtirala guesthouses: The Dogma and other park-edge guesthouses serve home-cooked mountain lunches.
Khulo: Basic but warm — try Cafe Dato for proper Adjaran dumplings (sinori) and highland cheese.
Back in Batumi: Laguna or Ali & Nino Tower restaurants for a seafood dinner; Apolon for upscale Georgian; Ukraine House for Black-Sea-style borscht.
What to pack
- Waterproof jacket: Essential. Adjara is the wettest region in Georgia.
- Light layers: Sea-level Batumi can be 30°C while Goderdzi Pass is 10°C.
- Sturdy shoes: Mountain trails and canyon paths.
- Swimming costume: For coastal stops and warm-weather Kobuleti days.
- Modest clothing: For highland mosque villages; covered shoulders and knees courteous even outside worship.
- Passport: If venturing close to Sarpi.
- Insect repellent: For the Kolkheti wetlands in summer.
- Sun protection: The Black Sea coast burns fast.
- Small cash: Rural cafes and guard tips.
FAQ
Is Batumi better as a base than Kutaisi? Different purposes. Batumi is a coastal destination with good urban dining and a smaller mountain day-trip circuit. Kutaisi is an inland base with a far bigger day-trip radius (canyons, caves, monasteries). For a balanced western Georgia week: 3 nights Kutaisi, 2–3 nights Batumi.
Is Adjara culturally distinct from the rest of Georgia? Yes. Historically under long Ottoman rule (1614–1878), Adjara retains a significant Muslim population in the mountains, has architectural differences (wooden houses, stone arch bridges), and a distinct cuisine. The boat-shaped Adjaruli khachapuri comes from here.
Can I visit Turkey from Batumi? Yes, via the Sarpi border. Most Western passport holders do not need a Turkish visa. Trabzon (Turkey) is 3 hours south by road. A day trip to Turkey from Batumi is feasible but tight.
How wet is Adjara? Very. Batumi gets 2,500+ mm of rain a year; the mountain interior gets 4,000+ mm. Rain is possible any day of the year; a waterproof jacket is essential luggage.
Is Goderdzi a serious ski resort? Emerging, not established. Limited lifts, variable snow quality, but cheap lift tickets and a genuine highland atmosphere. Gudauri remains the main Georgian ski resort. See the Gudauri guide.
Can I combine Batumi with Svaneti? Yes via Zugdidi. Batumi to Mestia is 5 hours driving including a mountain road. Better as part of a Kutaisi-Batumi-Svaneti loop than directly from Batumi.
