Georgia adventure itinerary: 10 days of extreme experiences

Overview

Georgia is one of the great adventure travel destinations in Eurasia. The Greater Caucasus mountains provide a theatre for some of the most challenging and rewarding outdoor activities on the continent — high-altitude trekking, paragliding, river rafting, mountain biking, and technical mountaineering for those properly equipped. This itinerary is designed for travellers who want to test themselves physically and experience Georgia’s wildest landscapes.

This itinerary assumes reasonable fitness and some outdoor experience. The Tusheti section involves a genuinely extreme mountain road and requires either an experienced driver or a local guide with appropriate vehicle.

Day 1: Tbilisi arrival and preparation

Arrive in Tbilisi. Use the afternoon to organise any gear rentals (trekking poles, crampons for high routes) and confirm logistics for the days ahead. Evening: a good meal with amber wine as fuel for the active days to come.

Day 2: Gudauri — paragliding and mountain exploration

Early drive north to Gudauri (2 hours). The main activity: tandem paragliding over the Caucasus mountain landscape. From 2,200m altitude, soaring over the mountain panorama is one of the most exhilarating experiences Georgia offers. See our paragliding guide for everything you need to know.

After the paragliding, explore the Gudauri plateau and the upper mountain terrain on foot. The area above the resort offers excellent walking with views across the Caucasus range. Overnight Gudauri or continue to Kazbegi.

Day 3: Kazbegi — Gergeti Trinity Church and Chaukhi Pass approach

Full day in Kazbegi. Morning: the Gergeti Trinity Church hike from the town (2 hours up, 1.5 down) — steep, physically demanding, with continuously improving views of Mount Kazbek and the surrounding Caucasus landscape.

Afternoon: reconnoitre the approach for more ambitious hikers — the route toward the Chaukhi massif or the base of Mount Kazbek at 3,600m (requires a guide and proper equipment for the glacier approach).

Evening: overnight in Kazbegi guesthouse. The town has several guesthouses with excellent local food.

Day 4: Kazbegi high route or Sno Valley

For fit and experienced hikers, the full-day hike from Kazbegi through the Truso Valley gorge (a spectacular 20 km route through an alien landscape of sulphur springs and abandoned settlements) is one of the finest day hikes in Georgia.

Alternative: the Sno Valley hike — a gentler valley walk with medieval towers and traditional villages.

Drive from Kazbegi back toward Tbilisi, then south and west to the start of the Svaneti route. Overnight near Kutaisi or drive to Zugdidi.

Day 5: Drive to Mestia — Svaneti

The drive from the western lowlands up into Svaneti (4–5 hours) is the day’s main physical activity — pure driving through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery. Arrive in Mestia by afternoon. Explore the tower village, the museum, and rest for the more demanding days ahead.

Day 6: Koruldi Lakes — high-alpine trekking above Mestia

The Koruldi Lakes hike is one of the finest high-alpine day hikes in the Caucasus. From Mestia (1,440m), the route climbs approximately 1,300m in elevation to the Koruldi plateau at 2,700m, with sweeping views of the Svaneti peaks including Ushba (4,710m — one of the most technically challenging peaks in the Caucasus, with a characteristic twin-summit profile).

The hike is strenuous — 8–10 hours round trip with significant elevation gain. Good fitness and proper footwear are required. A local guide is recommended for first-time visitors.

Day 7: Ushguli and the upper Enguri Valley

Drive to Ushguli (45 minutes, 4WD road). Hike around the village complex and up into the upper valley above the settlement — the views of Shkhara (5,193m) from the upper valley are among the finest mountain panoramas in Georgia. Return to Mestia for overnight.

Day 8: Svaneti to Tusheti — the extreme connection

This is the most logistically complex day of the itinerary — a very long drive connecting Svaneti with Tusheti via Tbilisi (or more directly via Pankisi Valley). The full route is 8–10 hours of driving. Most adventure travellers either fly Mestia–Tbilisi or overnight somewhere en route.

For those with maximum time, the direct route: Mestia → Zugdidi → Kutaisi → Tbilisi → north toward Alvani for Tusheti. Overnight near Alvani.

Day 9: Tusheti — the Abano Pass and mountain villages

The most extreme day of the entire itinerary. The Abano Pass road from Alvani to the Tusheti valley is 70 km long and climbs to 2,850m. The upper section is notoriously rough, narrow, and exposed — a genuine extreme mountain driving experience that requires a capable 4WD vehicle and ideally an experienced local driver.

The reward is extraordinary: arrival in the Tusheti valley with its medieval tower villages clustered on mountain spurs, the extraordinary landscape of the high Caucasus in near-total isolation, and the sense of having arrived somewhere genuinely remote.

Overnight in Omalo guesthouse.

Day 10: Tusheti hikes and return

A morning hike from Omalo to the upper villages — Dartlo and Shenako are the most beautiful, with defensive towers perched on dramatic ridgelines. Afternoon: the long drive back over the Abano Pass to Alvani and then to Tbilisi (7–9 hours total). Arrive late evening.

Book an organised 3-day Tusheti escape (recommended for the Abano road)

Additional adventure activities in Georgia

If this 10-day structure doesn’t cover all your targets:

White water rafting: The Rioni River (Imereti) and the Bzhuzha River offer class III–IV rapids in spring and early summer. Several Kutaisi-based operators run half-day and full-day rafting trips.

Mountain biking: Svaneti and the Gudauri area have growing mountain bike infrastructure. Trail networks at Gudauri are developing rapidly.

Rock climbing: The Kazbegi area and specific crags near Tbilisi (Mtatsminda ridge) have established climbing routes.

Technical mountaineering: Mount Kazbek (5,047m) is one of the most accessible 5,000m peaks in the Caucasus for experienced mountaineers — a 2-day technical route from the Gergeti Base Camp with proper equipment and guide.

Physical preparation guide

This itinerary has real physical demands. Arrive prepared:

Fitness baseline: The Koruldi Lakes hike (1,300m elevation gain over 4–5 hours of ascent) is the hardest single day. If you can comfortably hike 1,000m of elevation gain in a day at home, you are ready. If not, the Koruldi Lakes is a serious undertaking and local guide guidance is essential.

The Gergeti hike (Day 3): Shorter but steep. The 2-hour ascent gains approximately 600m over 3 km. In summer heat (July–August), this feels harder than the distance suggests. Start early (before 09:00) to avoid midday heat.

The Abano Pass road (Day 9): Not a physical challenge but a psychological one. The road is genuinely terrifying in sections — if severe heights cause panic in you, book a local driver rather than driving it yourself. The road requires concentration and experience, not just a capable vehicle.

High altitude: Koruldi Lakes reach 2,700m; Ushguli is at 2,200m; the Abano Pass summit is 2,850m. Acclimatise before attempting the hardest days. Do not go from sea level to 2,700m in two days — the first Gudauri/Kazbegi days serve as acclimatisation.

Footwear: Proper hiking boots (ankle support, waterproof) are essential for all mountain days. Running shoes are not adequate for the Koruldi hike or the Truso Valley route.

Food and fuel for active days

Active travel demands different eating to leisurely sightseeing. Georgia’s food culture aligns well with the caloric requirements of a heavy hiking day:

Pre-hike breakfast: Georgian guesthouses serve bread, butter, fresh cheese, honey, and eggs — excellent high-protein, high-carbohydrate hiking fuel. Eat a full breakfast before any mountain day.

On-trail food: Pack food from the previous day’s market or guesthouse. Churchkhela (walnut-grape candy) is the ideal trail snack — portable, calorie-dense, and specifically designed for physical labour by the people who invented it. Add bread, hard cheese, and fruit.

Post-hike recovery: A Georgian table full of small plates — the pkhali, the bean dishes, the meats — is excellent recovery food after a hard hiking day. The evening wine is genuinely part of the recovery: amber wine’s polyphenols and the social ritual of unwinding with food and drink.

Hydration at altitude: Water is available from mountain streams above 2,000m in Georgia, but purification is recommended. Carry a filter or purification tablets for the Tusheti and Svaneti high routes.

Practical notes

Physical requirements: This itinerary assumes good fitness and some mountain experience. The Koruldi Lakes hike (1,300m elevation gain in one day) and the Tusheti road driving are the most demanding elements. Do not underestimate either.

Vehicle: A genuine high-clearance 4WD is essential for Tusheti. Consider hiring a local driver with their own vehicle for the Abano Pass — it is significantly safer than driving an unfamiliar vehicle on an unfamiliar road for the first time.

Season: July–September for the complete itinerary. Tusheti and the high Svaneti hikes are not possible with snow. The Abano Pass may be snow-covered into late June in some years.

Insurance: Ensure your travel insurance specifically covers adventure activities (hiking at altitude, paragliding) and mountain rescue. This is non-negotiable for this itinerary. Standard travel insurance often excludes activities above a certain altitude or classified as “extreme sports.”

Guides: For the Koruldi Lakes hike and for Tusheti, a local guide adds safety, local knowledge, and navigation confidence. Mestia has several professional mountain guides who can be booked directly or through guesthouses. For Tusheti, local drivers with their own capable vehicles are safer than self-driving.
